China seeks to enhance broadcast coordination with developing countries

China hopes to reinforce broadcast coordination with other developing countries, so as to raise developing countries’ voice in the international community, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said on Thursday. Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with high-ranking foreign officials in Beijing for a ministerial training program on radio and television.

The training program was an important move to strengthen cooperation between the broadcasting institutions of China and other developing countries, said Mr Liu. He said he hoped the broadcasters could give full play to their respective strength, and promote exchanges and coordination, in a bid to boost friendly cooperation, raise developing countries’ voice in the world, and contribute to the building of a harmonious world. The media exchanges and cooperation had become an important part of the relationship between China and other developing countries, he said.

Mr Liu also expressed appreciation of developing countries’ objective and impartial reports about China. The training program, gathering almost two dozen of foreign officials in charge of radio and television industries, was held by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

The officials were from twelve developing countries, including Myanmar, Liberia and Cuba.

Andy Sennitt comments: This is of course an official report that doesn’t mention what China hopes to get out of it. While help with broadcasting in developing countries is welcomed by the recipients, these countries are expected to give airtime to China Radio International, and Chinese industry hopes to be first in line when contracts are offered for exploiting natural resources. This gradual expansion of Chinese influence mirrors what the Soviet Union was doing thirty years ago.
