Canadian Conservatives say they’re committed to French language TV

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced that, if elected*, a new Conservative Government will increase funding for TV5, the international French-language television network, by $25 million over the next five years. “TV5 is a success story for French-speaking Canada,” said the Prime Minister. “This new funding demonstrates our commitment to supporting high-quality, French-language TV programming across Canada and the world.”

Under the Conservative plan, the TV5 Quebec Canada consortium will receive an additional $10 million to develop programming and partnerships, provide Canadian, high definition programming to the global TV5 network, and enhance technological platforms such as video-on-demand. The remaining $15 million will go to TV5Monde to increase Canadian content on the global network from 6 per cent to 9 per cent, and to ensure a Canadian francophone presence in senior management positions to promote Canadian interests.

“Our government has increased funding for the arts,” the Prime Minister said. “But we have set priorities and made choices. This includes supporting government programs that actually promote Canadian arts and artists at home and around the world. TV5 is such a priority.”
