Canada: Windsor residents seek injunction against CBC

A group of local residents has filed a legal injunction to try to stop the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) from discontinuing its French-language local radio news and programming in Windsor, Ontario. Listeners will still receive national broadcasts of Radio-Canada. But due to the public broadcaster’s shortfall in funding, it plans to stop locally produced French content for the 35,000 francophone residents in the area after this week.

The group SOS-CBEF, referring to the call letters of the AM station [on 540 kHz], petitioned the CBC to wait until the commission of official languages, Graham Fraser, completes an investigation into the matter. The group has now taken legal action, asking the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to prevent the discontinuation of service, at least until Mr Fraser concludes his investigation.
