Bishkek, 25 February: The privately-owned Almaz-Naryn Radio station’s equipment has been stolen in Naryn Region [eastern Kyrgyzstan].
The building of the radio station is in what is called the Voyennyy Gorodok [Cantonment] in the city of Naryn [capital of Naryn Region]. According to staff of the radio station, the supply of electricity to the radio station was cut off at about 0900 [local time] in the morning on 24 February, which was resumed two hours later.
Within this time, unidentified thieves managed to cut out about 4 metres of the cable connected to an aerial, which was mounted on the roof of the building.
The incident occurred in the daytime. The area of the radio station is always crowded. Moreover, the cable which was stolen is unsuitable for selling as non-ferrous metal, the staff said. A group of investigators from the Naryn district police department visited the scene following an appeal by the radio station.
Radio Almaz rebroadcasts Radio Azattyk [Radio Liberty Kyrgyz Service], Deutsche Welle, the Voice of America and the BBC to Naryn Region. The radio station has been unable to broadcast since yesterday.
