The BBC HD channel and Aljazeera English have won ‘Service of the Year’ and ‘Best Digital News channel’ respectively at the 2009 Freesat Awards. Held in London, the inaugural event saw the BBC HD channel praised as “a clear winner” in the selection process because “the ever-growing variety of quality drama, comedy, sport and natural history programming in brilliant High Definition is building this new channel a well-earned reputation with audiences”.
Freesat also recognised Aljazeera English and said that it was the station the Freesat judges would “turn to when a big story breaks”. The award also honoured Aljazeera English as a channel with a trusted viewpoint and for going beyond just reporting the headlines. Tony Burman, Managing Director of Al Jazeera English, said: “Aljazeera English is honoured to receive this award, which embodies one of AJE’s greatest strengths - our commitment to in-depth and innovative news coverage.”
The Freesat Awards celebrate outstanding contributions in digital TV and TV-related areas.
