Police detained 5 members of the opposition party Musavat’s youth organization yesterday before they were able stage a protest in front of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council (NTRBC) against foreign radio stations being closed in Azerbaijan , Tural Abbasli, a member of the youth organization, told Trend News.
“The young activists were standing with posters in front of the library,” Abbasli said. “The police detained them for no reason and took them to Police Station 39 in the Sabail district before they got to the National Council.”
On 1 January BBC, Radio Liberty and Voice of America stopped broadcasting on Azerbaijani frequencies due to a NTRBC decision on 30 December. Police Office 39 confirmed that the Musavat young activists have in fact been detained. “They will be freed after they are warned,” an officer told Trend News over the telephone. He did not explain why the activists were detained.
