The new Azerbaijani International TV channel is not intended for domestic consumption, said chairman of the National Television and Radio Council Nushirevan Mehheremli. According to him, the channel is for satellite broadcasting.
“For this purpose Azerbaijan has not provided it with a frequency. The TV channel will sign a contract with satellite owners and start broadcasting. As we have not allotted a frequency for it, we only allotted a licence beyond a contest. The area of the channel broadcasting depends not only on the wish but also on the financial opportunity. Naturally, the broadcasting will primarily cover the neighbouring states. Then, this area will expand when possible”, said Meherremli.
He noted that the TV channel will broadcast in foreign languages. The language of broadcast and the essence of the programmes will be defined by the channel administration.
“We have not raised the issue of language restrictions and nature of programmes. The Council does not demand from them to broadcast definite programmes in any language. This issue is a competence of the TV channel. They do not broadcast on our national frequency. If the potential does not allow, they will not broadcast in any language. Moreover, the channel may hire an international team of professional workers.”
