Steve Young is the latest former Radio Caroline DJ to give a newspaper interview following the release of the movie “Pirate Radio”. Steve, who was born as Steve Oppitz in Wales, emigrated to Canada as a child and joined the radio game shortly after graduating from Medicine Hat High School. On Radio Caroline he presented the overnight slot at midnight to 6 am for a year. He worked at stations in Vancouver and Kelowna, BC, after his return to Canada before signing off for good in 1977.
Steve Young told the Medicine Hat News that he enjoys the renewed interest in the pirate radio stations, but feels that those who played roles in the real life adventure of Radio Caroline will see some shortcomings in the movie. “It’s the Hollywood version,” said Young. “But people will enjoy the film.”
