AM radio may be struggling in many markets, but in New York the latest Arbitron ratings show that the city’s two AM news stations have a combined total share of almost 13 percent of the morning ratings, putting them at numbers one and two. In fact, four of the top ten stations are on AM. The top music show is on WLTW-FM, which has a 5.4 rating, narrowly beating oldies-formatted WCBS-FM which recorded a 5.3 share. The full top 10 listing for New York’s breakfast shows is:

In the US AM talk radio is still very strong - but almost exclusively in major markets like NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. It’s a vastly different story in smaller communities…

Two news stations at the top of the ratings is odd; both of them being on AM is odder. But strangest of all is: aren’t they both owned by the same broadcasting company?

Rob R., actually all three points are very typical for major US media markets. Well, ownership might be different though.
