All India Radio to build at least 100 low power FM relays in North East

AIR logoAt least 100 new FM transmitters with 100 Watt capacity are planned by All India Radio in various remote localities of the North East, including Sikkim, during the 11th Plan period. In addition, 19 more FM transmitters with 1 kW capacity are also in the pipeline for the region during the period.

The engineer-in-chief of All India Radio, New Delhi, HR Singh stated this while inaugurating the Fourth Zonal Conference of the engineering heads of AIR stations of the NE region at Guwahati on Saturday. Singh said that a series of recruitment drives and promotional activities would be completed in the current financial year to improve on its existing coverage.

He also urged the engineers working in various stations to act in a co-ordinated manner to make the public broadcasting service more meaningful. He also insisted on developing a work culture keeping pace with the changing broadcasting technology. Singh further assured that he would initiate moves to develop the infrastructure and civil works in the AIR stations of the region at par with the stations of the country.

Engineering heads of nearly 40 AIR stations of the region, including Sikkim, participated in the two-day conference. Addressing the conference, the Deputy Director General (NE) Doordarshan, Guwahati, ST Sailo stressed the need to develop the infrastructure to face the challenges from the mushrooming private electronic media in the region. Sailo also suggested replacement of some old transmitters for quality broadcasting of the radio programmes.

This was also addressed by Chief Engineer (Maintenance), PS Bajpai, who said that there is a proposal to set up a 20 kW digital transmitter for the youth programme at the Guwahati AIR Stationduring the 11th Plan period.

100 watt unmanned low power FM transmitters can serve a radius of 3 to 4 KM effectively. It can relay programme via DTH platform. DD Direct plus DTH set tuned to audio signals where 15 channels of AIR is available. It will select one as per choice and relay it. 30 mts back up power UPS added to this unit for un interrupted transmission. It is mainly for the shadow zone or skip zone for 100% coverage.

    Dear Sir,
There is no provision for commercial licensing of LPFM at present. Phase III of commercial FM stations not finalised. Community Radio Station or CRS is licensed to Educational Institutes, universities, NGOs, Farmer\’s forum etc. Installation by BECIL and licensing authority is Prasar Bharati.

12-15KM area coverage comes under pvt fm sector like mirchi/redfm/amarfm/redfm and so on. If u want to serve rural people go for 1 KW MW coverage. which may cover 10-12 KM area. Pattern is CRS or community radio station. Licensing authority is Min of I & B, Govt of India. You can not start without license and frequency assignment. Low power 3 KW FM can be useful but running cost including programme production/energy consumed/standby power set up/ depreciation may come to 20 lakhs in a year. Machinaries and equpments inclu installation another 20 Lakhs. infrastructure like land and building another 20 lakhs. Now u can calculate the B E Point.

For all who are interested for setting up of Fm stations but no money. 1st of all, Is it only for a pastime? hobby? or time pass? In that case you can start with 1200 rupees only. range off course would be some metres. If you install at a 4 storey building than it may cover the entire building. (Max 40 metres). For further improvement you need license and your elligibility proof.
