24-Hr Bernama news channel proposal soon for Malaysian Cabinet

The proposal for the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) to have a 24-hour television news channel will be tabled in the Cabinet soon, said Deputy Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. “We will bring it up with the Cabinet for approval so that it can be realised as soon as possible,” he said today.

He said Bernama had enough skilled staff and the necessary infrastructure to undertake the endeavour and that Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) or pay TV station Astro’s resources could be utilised for the venture. “Once RTM is fully digitalised, a channel can be provided to Bernama for the purpose or alternatively, can be rented from Astro,” he said.

On Bernama’s 24-hour radio news channel launched since October last year, Ahmad Zahid said that he was satisfied with the response to the station and hoped it could be expanded nationwide soon. The channel is presently only available in the Klang Valley on 93.9 FM.
