On Sunday I had the privilege and pleasure of conducting a master class at The Hague Library on Truth, Reconciliation and Amnesty in the Aftermath of Serious Human Rights Violations.
New democracies face complex challenges
In the older democracies, the institutions of democracy are understandably taken for granted. Voting in a national election is not a “big deal” and free and fair elections are the rule. In newer democracies the challenges are different and far more complex. The recent in India and South Africa provide a stark contrast.

For the last four days I have participated in the 58th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs held in The Hague. The title of this year’s conference was Justice, Peace and Nuclear Disarmament.
From Noordwijk to St. Louis

I write this from Washington University in St. Louis where we begin the last of three days on a conference related to the drafting of a new Crimes against Humanity Convention.

My wife, Noleen, and I arrived this week at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar. It is a great privilege to be the first Spinoza Fellow. We are enjoying getting to know the area and especially the beautiful spring flowers that are appearing each day.
