New democracies face complex challenges

In the older democracies, the institutions of democracy are understandably taken for granted. Voting in a national election is not a “big deal” and free and fair elections are the rule. In newer democracies the challenges are different and far more complex. The recent in India and South Africa provide a stark contrast.

Return to The Hague

My wife, Noleen, and I arrived this week at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar. It is a great privilege to be the first Spinoza Fellow. We are enjoying getting to know the area and especially the beautiful spring flowers that are appearing each day.
