A few days after a Dutch feature on a traditional wedding on ice, the English department spoke to Sijtje (Sytje) Boes about this tradition. Sijtje started a shop with souvenirs in 1921 after showing around tourist in her own house. She mastered some foreign languages to speak to the tourists in their own languages. Due to the many brochures of the tourist board Sytje was well known in North-America.
In this interview she tries to explain the old costum of a marriage on ice. 1956 was a cold winter with an ‘11-city race’ (Elfstedentocht, Skating marathon in Friesland).
