The United Nations proclaimed 1996 the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty. The goal was to lift a quarter of the world’s population out of extreme poverty, which for over one billion people means surviving on less than a dollar a day. It was a noble goal, and one which went largely unnoticed by the general public and the media. A billion people who live on less than one dollar a day.. . It’s a reality which is so remote for most of the other 3 billion people in the world that the imagination falters or draws a blank. This is what the United Nations means when it speaks of extreme poverty.

Radio Nederland presenteert ‘The Challenge’ (’De Uitdaging’). Het programma, geproduceerd en gepresenteerd door Eric Beauchemin.
Het jaar 1996 werd door de Verenigde Naties uitgeroepen tot het ‘Internationale Jaar voor het Uitroeien van Armoede’. Het doel was een kwart van de wereldbevolking uit extreme armoede te halen. Extreme armoede betekent dat deze mensen moeten overleven op minder dan één dollar per dag. Een nobel doel, maar het probleem staat zo ver af van die andere 3 miljard mensen dat het hun voorstellingsvermogen te boven gaat.
