‘Music by 16th century Dutch composer Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck” , presented by the Transcription Service of Radio Nederland in Hilversum, Holland.
The latter half of the 16th century, those years following the reformation, was a stiring age throughout Western Europe. During this period the Dutch people fought for their freedom and their very existance. They achieved their goal and took their place among the world’s commercial and cultural leaders. It was into this world of change and turmoil that Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck was born in Deventer in 1562, a child who was to become perhaps the greatest composer that the Netherlands has yet produced. Whilst still an infant Sweelinck was taken by his family to Amsterdam, where he was educated. He remained there as a composer, teacher and organist at the Old Church until his death in 1621. Sweelinck was well-known and highly thought of among his contemporaries as we learn from the many references to him in the writings of the period. He was praised as musician and organist, most celebrated in all the world. A man who had no equal. His mastery of the forms and styles of his period is evident in all his music, whether for harpsichord, organ or voices.
