Veterinary science gets more human

A couple days ago I posted a story about the opening of the Goldfish Hotel in Schipol airport here in Holland… here’s another story about how much the Dutch love their pets…

Blood analysis, echoscope, physiotherapy and acupuncture: in the Zuidplas Animal Clinic in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, pets get the best care veterinary science has [...]

Fishy hotel??

As a pet owner myself, I understand the dilemma of anyone who has to leave their beloved Fifi or Foufou behind when they travel.
I know how difficult it is to find someone you trust to care for your dog or cat… or hamster or gerbil… let alone a fine salt-water fish…
But now, D-Reizen, a Dutch [...]

Homesick for Holland?

The Dutch are known for traveling far and wide, and many have made permanent homes in foreign countries… but, like most expats, no matter how much they love their new homes, there are some things they miss about their old home.
Watch this video by Marjolein Stoop to find out what expat Dutch miss most (or [...]

Yup, I did it…

I finally tasted Dutch “nieuwe haring” (new herring).
And it wasn’t half bad.
For those uninitiated readers out there, “haring” (herring) is a type of small fish (about 5-6 inches / 12-16 cm). They’re often eaten pickled or smoked, but in Holland, they’re cured with salt and eaten raw, sometimes served with pickles and/or chopped raw onions. [...]

Wild for Wilders

They’re wild for Wilders.
It’s true.
Geert Wilders - yes, the right-wing, anti-Islam, politician Geert Wilders - went from 0 to 4 seats in last week’s EU elections.
I’m still (yes, still) in shock.
And the really weird thing is that I don’t know a single soul who would vote for Wilders. Not that I know a stunningly large [...]

Expat voices - Kerry O’Malley on life in the Netherlands

Thanks to Radio Netherlands’ partnership with Expatica, (a great website for expats - yes, it sounds like an info-mercial, but I, too, found tons of helpful information on Expatica before I moved here), we have a new sometimes-series on the Curious Orange blog. It’s called “Expat voices” and, not shockingly, it’s a series of short [...]

In bed with John & Yoko

Ok, another entry that I should have posted last week (bad me!!).
This year was the 40th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s famous “bed-in for peace” in Amsterdam’s Hilton hotel. It was also the inspiration for a new Dutch book, called “In bed met John en Yoko” (In bed with John and Yoko).
Radio Netherlands [...]

Intensely Dutch

This week on Curious Orange, we told you about the opening of an exhibition in Australia… of Dutch art.
Intensely Dutch is a collection of “some of the most important post-war Dutch artists, including those associated with CoBrA (Copenhagen, Brussels, & Amsterdam) and art informel, and those who preceded them, such as Willem de Kooning”.
Even though [...]

Dutch history… in New York State…?

Ok, it’s true, I should have got this up last week… since it’s a story from last week’s show. However, here in the Netherlands, we’ve had a long run of holidays… so I’ve been avoiding my computer (plus the internet is down in my apartment - AAK - so I can’t do my usual workaholic [...]

Dutch food in Afghanistan not good enough for the Aussies?!

Hahahaha! I just read this and I think it’s hilarious.
Apparently, Australian soldiers have complained about the bad Dutch food being served in Kamp Holland, Afghanistan!
Of course, it’s perfectly understandable. While the food on Kamp Holland was… plentiful… and, well… food, it’s not exactly going to satisfy the gourmet palate (and apparently not even the palate [...]
