Lowlander for life

This weekend I was a very lucky person - I got to go to the Lowlands festival… for free.

For those of you who have no idea what that is, it’s a 3-day music festival held in the Dutch province of Flevoland. Basically, along with 60-thousand other people, you camp and party and drink and dance and don’t sleep for 3 days.

It’s pretty pricey (150 euros) and tickets sell out fast (before the 150+ band line-up is even announced!), so a Lowlands wristband is pretty coveted.

And I got one… for free… because I was going to make a video.

The funny part? I was making a video about a girl named Florien - somebody even luckier than I was… because she won the “Lowlands for life” contest put on by 3FM (a national radio station here in Holland).

Watch her first day at Lowlands 2009.

Florien didn’t have enough money to buy a ticket when they went on sale, so she was desperate to find another way. She tried every contest she could find but didn’t win anything… until her friend called and convinced her to enter the 3FM Lowlander for life contest on public radio.

The two of them signed up and battled it out for an entire week, dancing for 13 hours straight, swimming for a whole day, writing a song and performing it with one of this year’s Lowlands performers, and, finally, cycling 50 km from the 3FM studios in Hilversum to the festival grounds in Biddinghuizen.

Florien went on to take first place - and the Lowlands for life passes - but her friend wasn’t upset; “She won two tickets so we’re BOTH Lowlanders for life!”

Which is what it’s all about for Florien.”It’s just not Lowlands without your friends. I especially like the great atmosphere. I don’t care which bands are here, there is always good music. I love Lowlands because it’s the greatest three days of the year.”
