I finally tasted Dutch “nieuwe haring” (new herring).
And it wasn’t half bad.
For those uninitiated readers out there, “haring” (herring) is a type of small fish (about 5-6 inches / 12-16 cm). They’re often eaten pickled or smoked, but in Holland, they’re cured with salt and eaten raw, sometimes served with pickles and/or chopped raw onions. (And yes, your breath DOES stink after you eat herring in Holland!)
They’re called “nieuwe” (new) herring, because, every year in late spring, the young herring are finally big - and fat - enough to be harvested… and eaten.
Below is a video of my very first Dutch herring tasting… enjoy!

Hi Jasmin,
Thanks for the comment… sorry it stopped at 1:10… but it’s working fine on all my computers (and I’ve tried 4 of them!).
Maybe something at your end?
Good luck!
