Ok, it’s true, I should have got this up last week… since it’s a story from last week’s show. However, here in the Netherlands, we’ve had a long run of holidays… so I’ve been avoiding my computer (plus the internet is down in my apartment - AAK - so I can’t do my usual workaholic thing and post from home).
At any rate.
Last week we told you about the New York - Netherlands 400th anniversary. You can read lots more about the history and all the events happening in NY and NL between now and September on this website.
But what I want to tell you a bit more about here is the story we did in last week’s show where our colleague David Swatling took a tour of a 250-year-old house in Albany, NY. That little story was actually only an excerpt from a longer documentary that David did about The Old Winne Place, a house built by a member of the Dutch “Winne” family, who came to NY in the 1600’s. One house has been moved to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY… where it’s now been refurbished and filled with period pieces (this is the bit we talked about in the show)… but another house from the old Winne farmstead is being restored on-site.
You can listen to our excerpt from David’s documentary here (or click the “listen” button above)… or listen to his whole documentary here… and you can read more about all the Winne houses in his article here.
You can read more about the opening of the exhibition at the MET here… and read about the collection of architecture, furniture, and silver from Colonial Dutch America at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here.
