The bearers of bad news

One of the things that Michel and I kinda obsessed over while we were in Afghanistan was the idea of a job where the stakes could include death - either yours or someone else’s (a kill-or-be-killed kinda thing).

We couldn’t imagine ourselves in this situation and relentlessly questioned any soldier who’d had a life-or-death experience.

What we didn’t think of right away are all the related things that come along with a death in the military… like the fact that somebody has to tell the family back home.

What a horrible job.

But, obviously, somebody’s got to do it (and much better this way than the way it used to be, with a list of dead soldier’s names posted at some public location in town…).

As it turns out, this is one of the jobs of military social workers. We spoke to two of them, Captains Irene and Roeland. You can listen to the interview here.
