I’m a little late on this since it happened right when I got back from Afghanistan… but I thought it was too funny not to post.
Apparently, a new yellow tulip has been cultivated here in Holland and was recently showcased at the world-renowned Keukenhof gardens.
So what’s the big deal?
It was named after SpongeBob SquarePants - the children’s TV cartoon character!
Apparently the kids invited to the unveiling were pretty excited about it, especially because SpongeBob himself showed up at the party.
According to De Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper, Michelle Lieverse (8)watches SpongeBob almost every day. She said, “He is so funny and has a good nose. When he goes to work he always says, ‘I’m ready for it.’ ” Her classmate Elise Hoogkamer (8) is also a fan of course and watches all the time “because he’s so cool and has a funny voice”.
The man who developed the tulip, Jan Ligthart, says it will still be four years before the bulbs are for sale in the Netherlands, “De first tulips are for America. Because foreign countries pay more. It’s as simple as that.”
Here’s a link to the article in the original Dutch.
And here’s a link to a video of SpongeBob and the kids with the flower itself. (Sorry I can’t insert it directly - it starts playing automatically and that’s pretty annoying!) (And yes, it’s in Dutch - sorry!) (original link)
