A civilian working on a military base

Deep inside Kamp Holland is Echos. We’ve mentioned it before, it’s the “bar” on the base where you can get a drink (alcohol-free) or a bite to eat, play video or board games, and just generally hang out with your friends.

Annelies is one of the people working at Echos. Her story is a peculiar one. She is not military - just a civilian. Can you imagine? A civilian who voluntarily choose to work on a dusty army base in Afghanistan? Not only that… she also gave up her nice Dutch house to move into one of the army containers that people call home for the duration of their tour. Those containers are small - very small - and are shared with up to three other people. So no privacy, and hardly any room to put your stuff.

But Annelies doesn’t seem to mind. She told me she wanted to start a new life, a life that she says gives her Freedom.

Listen here to my interview with Annelies about her work at Echos and her search for Freedom.
