While we were still in Afghanistan, we posted a video of the inside of the Afghan bakery on the base (you can see that here).
Now that we’re back, we finally found the time to edit the interview we did with one of the bakers (I won’t even attempt to spell his name). You can listen to the whole thing here.
Here are some of the pictures from the bakery (click to see a larger version). Below that is the video I posted earlier (just in case you can’t be bothered to click the link above!).
- A view of the inside of the bakery - you can see how dark and smoky it is!
- Another shot of the interior - I think the guy is arranging the balls of dough that are ready to be flattened.
- Kneading the dough in a huge bathtub-like vat.
- Pressing out the dough balls before stamping flat.
- Stamping the dough into flat circles, ready to bake.
- The flattened dough with stamped patterns - ready for the oven.
- Bread - cooked and uncooked - on a table next to one of the bakers.
- The baker standing in front of the opening to his clay oven - you can see the bread stuck to the inside of the wall as it bakes.
- This man spent the entire time crouched on this platform with the fresh bread, spreading them out to cool.
