General Tom Middendorp and Civilian Representative Joep Wijnands share control of the TFU - Task Force Uruzgan (you’ll get used to all the acronyms, I promise). As you might imagine, the General is more or less in charge of the military side of things while the Civ Rep (that’s what they call him) is in charge of the reconstruction side of things. But they explained to me that, really, the two sides are very much integrated - the key to the so-called “Dutch approach”.
I’ll let the General and the Civ Rep themselves explain what exactly the “Dutch approach” is, how it works, and whether it’s working… you can listen to them here.
