Safe and sound in Tarin Kowt!

Well, after 24 hours of traveling (and waiting), we finally made it to TK (yes, that’s army slang… and yes, there will be more… and yes, it makes us cool to use it).

We’ve already taken copious notes and dozens of photos and we’ll get some blog entries up as soon as we can… but, as that requires consciousness, it might have to wait until we’ve had a decent night’s sleep. Plus, the Press Officers have to look over everything we publish to make sure we haven’t given away any Top Secret Information.

Yes, I know. We feel a little strange about it too.

On that Big Brother note, here are a couple pics to keep you going until the next entry…

RE: your being (symbolically) embedded w/ the army..

What are the beds like in a war zone? How (much) do soldiers sleep (on base vs on a mission) is there an army policy about sleep? Is it noisy? Do soldiers sleep well? What do people dream about in a war zone?

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your comment and questions.
To answer a few, the beds are a regular, single army cots (metal frame, single mattress). I have a bottom sheet and a sleeping bag, though it seems like most of the guys have proper bedding. Of course, that’s on the base… what the sleeping conditions are like outside the base I’m not sure. Actually, I’m not sure how often the guys sleep outside the base, period.
As for noise-levels, my bedroom is very quiet - because I have it all to my self (for now I’m the only female journalist in TK). Michel shared his room last night… and he said it was also quiet. Then again, he wasn’t sleeping with a bunch of young guys, just one Slovakian General.
As for the rest of your questions… hmm… I’ll have to find out!
