Learning to tie a headscarf…

So. In preparation for our trip to Afghanistan, I had to learn how to wear a headscarf.

I convinced Ida Ramlan, from the Administration department here at Radio Netherlands (and one of the only people in the building wearing a headscarf!), to help me.

Below are a few pictures that Michel took of my transition (don’t get confused by the changing scarf colors - we tried on a couple different ones and not all photos are equal (he tells me I’m a blinker)!).

Actually, not only did I learn how to wear a headscarf, I learned that there are a lot of different ways to do it. Apparently, wherever you go, women tie their scarves differently. I knew I’d seen photos of women in all different sorts of headscarves… but somehow I didn’t quite realize the extent of it.

Anyways. After doing this with Ida I spoke to our intern Narcis Zohrehnassab who’s from Iran and she said I don’t need to tie the scarf quite so tightly in Afghanistan. She said they usually just put the scarf over their heads, cross the ends under their chins, and then drape them back over their shoulders. And she’s lent me a bunch of scarves so I won’t have to wear the fuzzy wool one that keeps me warm here in Holland!

But what about Michel? Here are instructions for him on how to properly wear a shemagh, a.k.a. keffiyeh , a.k.a. a ‘Palestinian scarf’. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OrxtMTy7SY.
As for the traditional Afghan man’s scarf, ask for details on the spot. The colours, patterns and other details have certain connotations which are a bit difficult to explain ;-)
