Ok. I’ll admit, it’s been a little quiet here on the Curious Orange blog. It’s terrible how life interferes with writing to all our dear and devoted readers, isn’t it?
But I promise we have a good excuse.
Which I will reveal very, very soon.
But in the mean time, I’ve just edited my second ever video! Go me!
It’s about dredging Amsterdam’s canals. Ever since I moved to the Netherlands, I’ve been fascinated with the canals and how they work - and the fact that a third of this country is below sea-level! How is that even possible?! The Dutch are renowned for their water-savvy-ness (no, I don’t think that’s a word, but it works for me)… and maybe all these Nederlanders understand how the water is pumped around and sucked out of the ground and corralled (or perhaps I should say “canalled” - haha)… but I find it totally mystifying.
So I’ve started a series of videos about how it all works.
This one is about, yes, you guessed it, dredging Amsterdam’s canals - digging up all the gunk and garbage below the “scenic surface”.
So. Without further ado, here is the video!
And now that you’ve watched that, let me shamelessly promote my other video about The FEBO Snack Experience. It’s… deliciously… Dutch. You can find that video here along with all the other recent videos produced by Radio Netherlands.
Enjoy!

Thanks Jasmin!
Just curious, have you ever been to Holland?
And what do you think about the canals (and the fact that 80% of the houseboats aren’t commected to the sewage system)?

Great video Ashleigh! It does make one want to replace that sigh of pleasure at the sight of such beauty with…well, an ironic snicker of sorts! I’m surprised though that he didn’t mention the masses of bicycles being dragged up (did he?)…I’ve heard from mature, well-behaved Dutchies that less-mature, not so well-behaved Dutchies like to dump bicycles in the canals for fun…sort of the way Americans treat shopping carts and dry ditches…but maybe that’s just Amsterdam legend…
